Music I’m grooving to now: Disappointed by Candy

Download great music for whatever you want to pay

I hope you got a chance to listen to my song “River” in the post below. But to quote Rocky J. Squirrel, “Now here’s something we hope you’ll really like.”

Musician Derek Webb is one of the founders of get-free-music-if-you-spread-the-word Web site NoiseTrade.com. Here’s some background from the Web site:

In 2006 Webb gave away his “Mockingbird” record for free online, asking in return for a little information (name, email address, and postal code), and as part of the process, for fans to invite their friends to download as well.

In three month’s time Webb gave away over 80,000 full downloads of his record and collected valuable information for as many new fans. In addition, Derek has since seen many sold out shows and increased merchandise and record sales, including a curious spike in sales of the very record that was given for free.

It was the massive success of this experiment that inspired Webb, with the help of a few trusted friends, to start NoiseTrade. Now any artist can freely distribute their music online, via NoiseTrade’s remarkable and embeddable widget, offering fans the choice to tell 3 friends or to pay any amount in exchange for an immediate download.

And no, the Web site does not track the email addresses you type in, unless that person visits and downloads.

It’s a remarkable way for a musician to spread the word about his music. Why not visit NoiseTrade.com and download Derek’s CD now? Or you can grab Andy Gullahorn’s CD “Reinventing the Wheel” by clicking in the widget below.

Newest recording: “River”

After I reformatted my Web site, I misplaced this recording of my song “River.”

I recording the piano in my dining room, using my Yamaha digital piano and an Apple GarageBand Steinway sample. The vocals were recorded at my friend Tim Bushong’s studio.

The DVD is in hand

The DVD is in hand, originally uploaded by Jon B. Swerens.

Here it is! It’s a video recording of my concert in Angola earlier this year. Once I figure out how to copy it and pop it into iMovie, I’ll get at least a snippet online.

Here’s a video in the same venue — Cahoots Coffee Cafe — and by the same guys who’ll be recording my concert on Saturday.

Note to self: Do not wear a patterned shirt.

Concert! (Remember those?)

On Saturday, April 5, I’ll be performing at Cahoots Coffee Cafe in Angola, Indiana — and being videorecorded for posterity!

So, if you’re interested in being in the audience for a shortish, 30-minute concert that may be available online or on DVD in the future, take down this information:

Saturday, April 5, maybe starting at 6 p.m. or so.

Hope you can make it, but if not, you may be able to see the concert sometime in the future anyway.

In the recording studio

Hi there! Well, I’ve been busy over at my other blog, The Good City, because people actually read that one.

But I have set a goal for my music for 2008: Record a CD.

I took the first steps toward that with the professional recording of some vocals at Tim Bushong’s studio up in Syracuse. And once I figure out how and where to post it, you’ll get to hear and hopefully download the fruits of our labor: The first draft recording of “River.”

Next gig: Friday, Nov. 30

So y’all know, I have recovered well enough from my asthma symptoms that I should have no problem performing at The Anchor Room later this month.

Sure you you can make it!

Gotta cancel the gig

Because of my asthma problems that just aren’t going away fast enough, I have to cancel Saturday’s concert at Cahoots in Angola.

I just can’t get through 45 minutes of singing without going into a hacking fit, and that doesn’t sound very nice.

But don’t forget: I have another gig scheduled for November 30 at The Anchor Room here in Fort Wayne. Hope to see you there!
