Achievements in current position
Production coordinator: Manage 10-person design and copy desk. Work with pre-press personnel to manage printing and production processes and meet deadlines with high quality. Manage news space budget.
Marketing and advertising liaison: Work with marketing department and Claritas data to shape branding and content strategies. Create ads aligned with marketing goals.
Technology trainer: Taught entire newsroom how to use new production system, after simplifying user interface and creating all training materials. Continue to solve technology issues as they arise.
Book editor: Managed print shop, designer, photo editor and contributors to produce glossy-page, retail-ready book on the 1982 Fort Wayne flood and photos from The News-Sentinel’s archive.
Art and graphics editor: Oversee creation of charts and maps to ensure precision.
Audio engineer: Write, produce and mix occasional news and features for local radio.
Career experience
The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Ind.: Hired as page one designer in Sept. 1998, promoted to assistant news editor in October 1999, promoted to news editor in January 2002 and promoted to news and presentation editor in March 2007. Also served as interim features editor, managing a three-person staff and numerous freelance writers, from October 2004 to March 2005.
Taylor University-Fort Wayne: As adjunct professor, taught desktop publishing and basic reporting in fall semester 1999 and 2001 and spring semester 2002.
The Observer, Dunkirk, N.Y.: Assistant managing editor from June 1994 to September 1998.
The Raymond Group, Bainbridge Island, Wash.: Staff writer for nationwide news program at marketing firm from January-May 1994.
The Parkersburg (W.Va.) News: Began as copy editor in 1989, promoted to copy desk chief and then to news editor, managing a staff of six.
Education and skills
Earned bachelor’s degree from school of journalism at West Virginia University in 1988
Adept at page layout and design, literate on both Macintosh and Windows platforms and proficient in QuarkXPress, InDesign, Freehand, Illustrator, Photoshop, the Office suite and HTML.
Experienced at writing hard news, features, advertising copy and radio.
